Newsletter NL176 – Friday 27th October 2023

Editor - Derek Godridge with Paul Cooper, Karen Burton and the team: PCC News:

  • Another informative evening reviewing and critiquing some of your image entries from last week’s competitions. Some really worthwhile issues were brought up and I make no excuse for repeating some of them from last week’s Newsletter!

    • Just a few pointers: o ALL images and Prints entered MUST be ALL your own work, so NO clipart, borrowed skies or backgrounds etc and most importantly NO Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Generative Fill AI additions/edits. ▪ NB PCC Competition rule changes pending o However, “Content aware” IS allowed because it uses immediately adjacent local areas of the image you are working on to fill in for you – just an easier cloning operation really. o Looking at your image, make sure you ask yourself “What is the subject” and then see if cropping around the “action areas” might concentrate the viewer’s attention. By the way – don’t forget to crop the ORIGINAL full size image NOT the smaller one you may have already prepared at 1600 pixels! o Don’t forget you can switch the aspect ratio around to 3 x 2 Horizontal to a 2 x 3 Vertical OR to a 16 x 9 “letterbox” ratio! o Judges like “different” as they do get jaded seeing the same old, same old! o If the competition is a set competition, make sure you comply. o Don’t enter two similar images in separate categories as only the better one will triumph ! o There are always fewer prints hence you stand a better chance of getting placed! o Points mean prizes, so the more you enter the better the chances!

  • Next Week – 2nd November is the super show coming up from our Globe-Trotting member Jeanette Ruberry.

  • Reminder – Your Entries for the “Lucky Dip” FUN competition are due to be handed in shortly on 9th November so get them ready folks !

  • Our Full Progamme is here: Don’t forget you can click on any of the Calendar Dates to find more Live information. If you DON’T have a USB drive please ASK Raymond Bate ASAP.

From Paul Cooper - Website content

For our newer members, we have some useful content on our website. For example, three years ago I wrote a blog on things to think about on a photoshoot. So: What did I write that is wrong, or what did I miss? Do you have a process or experience that the club might benefit from? Perhaps a workflow on lighting or thoughts on various lens options? We have three formats for such knowledge.

Need help to write such an article? Email your idea to Paul. Good to go? Again email the completed work (and separate images, if any) to Paul at
