Newsletter NL181 – Saturday 2nd December 2023

Editor: Derek Godridge with assistance from Karen Burton and John Yarrow

SPECIAL REQUEST From The Chair! Wendy has asked me to ask you to please think about gifting the club any items as Raffle Prizes please for our Christmas Lunch. Please bring any such items to next week’s meeting. Many thanks ☺

PCC News:

  • As we all know, there was no meeting this week as your committee were somewhat concerned by the cold snap we had and the predicted icy conditions. We certainly didn’t want any nasty accidents, so hopefully by next week conditions will have improved and we can return to normal.

  • Earlier in the week some of you went along to the Photography Institute at Penryn Campus to view the facilities and studios. Our member Carina studied there and has pulled together a very comprehensive report for you, which I have enclosed as an attached special supplement. Having worked there for 10 years supporting various photography and art students mainly “scribing” their lectures, I know only too well how comprehensive the facilities are. Apparently, Karen will be looking to arrange another trip, so if you missed this one, or want to go again there will be other opportunities.

Editing Corner: This is a new section for members to add their editing advice, tips or recommendations, so if you have any to share please email them to me and I’ll get them posted ☺ Here’s the first of this series by John Yarrow with his explanation of his “fairly easy” edit of his well-placed image in our recent KF1 Competition. Why not have a go and post your effort on our member’s Facebook Page

  • Several members asked (me) how the circular / inside-out 'John Dory' image was created. It's a very easy process that is effective with a great range of subjects. Be warned, though, it becomes addictive and you can easily waste plenty of hours transforming your shots.

  • In Photoshop...

  • a) Crop your image to a square.

  • b) Go to Filter (top of the screen) > Distort > Polar coordinates

  • c) Click on 'Polar to Rectangular' then 'OK'

  • d) Go to Image (top of the screen) > Image Rotation > 180

  • e) Go to Filter (top of the screen) > Distort > Polar coordinates

  • f) Click on 'Rectangular to Polar' then 'OK'

  • Have fun! John Yarrow

Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question – Just Ask !

All the best Derek and the Team!
