PCC News – 12th September Meeting

Important: Membership fees are now due and anyone who hasn’t paid by 26th September will be assumed to have resigned.

Last night was a really successful meeting which was really well attended by existing and more new members! So a huge WELCOME to the friendliest camera club in Cornwall and for new members, we look forward to making you comfortable with the club, our members and the programme of events and social outings that we have planned right through till next April. Please remember that you will have much to learn about the way we work, but just take it slowly and make sure you join in as much as possible. .... and just ASK if you need to !

Many members brought three images to talk about and many of them gave us an insight into their interests and particular preferred genre. John Yarrow was on hand to help members with PhotoEntry and Mark Quilter had kindly brought his mount cutter to demonstrate that process. Derek was also providing guidance on mounting prints into pre- cut mounts. If you missed any of the above and need to know .... Just ASK - we don’t bite!

Bonython Gardens Trip – Karen Burton

Four miles south of Helston tucked away is a gem of a garden. 20 Acres surrounded by woodlands and lakes with a multitude of plants, trees, grasses, flowers and herbs.

We met the Head Gardener Bradley covered in slime and gunge as he had been clearing out one of the ponds. He was going to give us a tour, but you know what us photographers are like we like to do our own thing! He was very knowledgeable knowing all the Latin names of the flowers. He was on hand if we had any questions.

Head Gardener Bradley

It is a beautiful garden with various areas such as Fern trees and a beautiful Silver Birch Wooded circular planting with an ornament in the centre.

There was a very pretty “Yew Church” with seating areas made from trees and even had a bamboo cross at the altar. There were colourful grasses which had shades of pink and purples which surrounded it.

There was a delightful cottage garden with artichokes and vibrant dahlias.

Everyone really enjoyed the tea and cake which is all homemade. The owner Sue Nathan originally from South Africa is a talented artist painting the botanical flowers and landscapes she is so proud of.

We have been asked by the local RBL if any of our members would be willing to help out with selling Poppies this year at Asda. It usually is a 2 hour slot and you are able to sit down by the door at Asda. It can be a bit chilly so you might want to wrap up.

You do not need to “sell” poppies, as it is not allowed to rattle the bucket, like the old days! People just come to the table and make their purchase with cash or there is a card reader which is easy to use. It is fantastic how generous people are.

Please let me know if you think you may be able to help RBL out this year.

Here at BCC, we are both proud and excited to have secured two inspirational speakers for our pre Christmas 2024/25 season programme. On 28/10/24 we have the pleasure of introducing John Hunt of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust who will be presenting The challenges and benefits of Rewilding.

Please refer to their website to fully appreciate their commitment to the countryside for our ultimate benefit. On 25/11/24 Rupert Kirkwood, the acclaimed “the Lone Kayaker” will be providing an entertaining and informative talk on his wildlife exploits and photography from around, not just the Cornish coastline, but locations such as California and Antarctic, all from a kayak. If you don’t believe me just log on to his website!!
