Newsletter NL195 – 15th March 2024

Editor: Derek Godridge with more from Paul and Karen: PCC News from Derek:

Last night a crowded meeting of Club members were very blessed to have Kevin Leah judge and, more importantly, discuss their KF3 prints and digital images! Kevin is a very popular judge on the Cornwall circuit and we are very lucky to have him share his tremendous knowledge and experience in the helpful comments that he offers us.

Kevin Leah judge

Each image was given due consideration with regards to their positive attributes as well as improvements which could be made and some of the more notable ones which may be used as reminders were as follows:

  • With prints, don’t forget that paper selection can sometimes make a real difference

  • One print was double mounted which really enhanced it

  • Certain images still had detail in the shadows and that really helps, don’t forget that you can always ADD light using simple white card or even a handkerchief as a reflector – it’s even allowed in “off-Camera”!!

  • If you are cropping in a photo just check to make sure you still have sufficient detail, especially in the face

  • Titles don’t really matter – until they do! Remember the judge will be guided by your ‘helpful’ title, so make sure that area particularly is sharp and well exposed

  • Remember to crop out empty or large out-of-focus areas if they distract from the action

  • Similarly watch out for locally bright areas which could distract attention from the main subject

  • Straighten images with verticals and horizons

  • Busy backgrounds will always distract the viewer

  • Be careful when using high ISO not to introduce excessive noise into the image and remember that even with the recent rule changes – noise reduction software CAN be used!

  • To that last point, if you are concerned regarding a noisy image just send the original to me and under your instruction(as defined in the latest rules) I will run it through the software I have
