PCC Social News this week from Carol Coward:

More From our recent trip to Screech Owl Sanctuary –

The Day of the Raptors!

Well! We were off to the Screech Owl Sanctuary near Indian Queens! What a great day it was too. Cameras at the ready as Keeper Kai took us down to the lake and showed us, first a Tawny Owl and then second a lovely Barn Owl!

Barn Owl

Barn Owls have always been my favourite, second the Snowy Owl and then the Great Grey Owl - all gorgeous birds and all very much alike to look at!

Derek kindly gave us some advice and we were away, clicking like crazy! Paul was even sitting on the ground to get a different viewpoint. When Kai took the Barn Owl out of its box, I got up again and took a few more pictures! This was when I discovered that my camera was playing up (Again!) It’s really being a pain! Oh well, maybe a new one is on the horizon!

After we finished down by the lake we strolled up to a ‘wild’ area and took some more pictures of the Barn Owl in a more natural location. We were then free to go wherever we wanted and we all walked up to the area of the Owl Flying Display. Our member Alison got to hold one of the owls called Bob and we all took pictures! Of course - what else would we have been doing?? The Owls all behaved and flew beautifully for us. Of course they had a treat every time!!

From there we all wandered around, clicking here and there, but time was going far too fast and it was soon lunchtime! We all queued up in the café. Oh boy - the queue took forever and Chris Saint said that it took half an hour to get our lunch! Chris Hamshaw, Ali and I all had the savoury Cheese cream tea which was not the best choice. After lunch we strolled around again and ended up down by the lake and the fox enclosure. One of the keepers was in there with three visitors and the fox was playing with them, biting their fingers too! It’s only just over twelve months old and is a real cutie.

Apart from the Owls there are also raccoons, meerkats, storks, a buzzard, Stinky Pete the stoat, a wallaby, lemurs, a kestrel, three alpacas and a couple of goats! The goats have got huge horns! Wouldn’t like to argue with them!!

Ali collected a few feathers as we strolled along and then asked one of the keepers if he had any. He told her to speak to Cai and he kindly gave her a few more. Once the flying display was finished the three of us all held Merryn – an Eagle Owl! She was beautiful!

an Eagle Owl!

I’m sure you all agree that the Owls are beautiful and Screech Owl Sanctuary is well worth a visit! We all enjoyed it!

Stithians Bonus Shot: Eve recently realized she had grabbed a great shot of a deer foal during the recent member’s visit to Stithians Lake and wanted to share it with us.
